In the early 1980's, I wrote
one concert of original chamber music per year for four years.
However, the first concert that I wrote was never performed, for a
variety of reasons. The music was difficult, I had trouble finding
musicians, and the concert turned out to be quite a bit too short.
I have since referred to this concert as Chamber Concert No. 0.
Eventually some but not all of the music was performed. CALYPSO
ROUND for flute, horn, marimba, harp, and double bass was written for
this Chamber Concert No. 0.
The music for this concert
was influenced by minimalism. It features several levels of
repeating patterns. At each repetition, one of the patterns
changes, so that, with all the repetition, nothing is actually the
same. CALYPSO ROUND is my tribute to Latin American music, from
which I have drawn much, both inspiration and content. At this
writing, the work has not been done as a quintet, but in 2000 I
orchestrated it. It was performed by the Phoenix Symphony, Robert
Moody conducting, in Jan. 2001.
